In 2006, we met 8 year old Bhupendra, who was born without his right leg. Bhupendra’s parents, earning a combined daily income of ~$7, had tirelessly saved, hoping to one day afford a prosthetic limb that could grant their son the simple joy of walking.

Without a prosthetic, Bhupendra was in too much pain to play, too embarrassed to make friends, and unable to walk to school.

The moment we fitted Bhupendra with his very first prosthetic limb, the relief and gratitude that washed over his parents mirrored the sheer elation radiating from Bhupendra himself. Bhupendra’s first act with his new prosthetic limb was to boldly leap from the doctor's table. His second? To enroll in school for the very first time.

We continued supporting Bhupendra through the years as he grew, providing him with over two dozen prostheses and standing by him through every growth spurt and childhood adventure.

In 2017, as Bhupendra celebrated his 19th birthday, we expanded our care to cover our CoolKids’ care through the age of 21, in honor of his journey. We continued providing Bhupendra with free prosthetic care as he enrolled in college, and successfully graduated.

In 2023, Bhuepndra opened his very own restaurant. An entrepreneur, he is now supporting himself, his family, and his community.

In 2025, we expanded our care again to cover our CoolKids’ care through the age of 25. As Bhupendra’s story reminds us —mobility provides the foundation needed to break the poverty cycle: independence, access to education, and future gainful employment.

100% of the children we serve will need continued treatment. A growing child needs care, on average, every six months. Join The CoolKids Club with a monthly donation to keep our CoolKids moving — Growing Up ALTSO is mobility for the future.
