Upon meeting him, Erico’s resilience was overwhelming, keeping him energetic and mobile like any other child his age.

Erico and his family live in the rural highlands of central Java. His father is a construction worker and his mother a housewife. His brother, a student, stands in place for his father who was currently working during the taking of this photo. Erico was born with a condition called Meromelia, a birth defect characterized by the lacking of a part, but not all, of one or more limbs with the presence of a hand or foot. It results in a shrunken and deformed extremity.

I find myself incredibly humbled when I meet families like Erico’s who welcome me into their home and share what little they have as if I was close friend or relative.
