HELPED TREAT 13 CHILDREN

STEPS OF INSPIRATION

Story by: Jamé Wannen (Pigtails)

"You know hiking is your life when you get turned on by the fact your partner knows your REI membership number by heart."

"You don't have to be Mr. REI, but you don't get connected walking on Asphalt."

So many children around the world can never hope to climb a mountain or even run down the road to play with their friends because they have lost a limb to an accident or were born without them. My husband David (The Pirate King) and I would like to help change that and use our passion for hiking the Appalachian Trail to raise money for ALTSO's kids.

Every time we climb a challenging mountain to a beautiful vista or complete difficult mileage, together we are reminded how fortunate we are to be physically capable of getting closer to fulfilling our dream of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail by 2018.

It was grueling hiking 8 hours in the dark, but what kept us going was knowing that there were kids out there who were enduring something much more difficult...

On February 16, 2013 (David's 35th birthday), we had our first campaign and raised over $3,500 when we hiked the entire length of the Appalachian Trail in Maryland - 41 miles in 16 hours. It was grueling hiking 8 hours in the dark, but what kept us going was knowing that there were kids out there who were enduring something much more difficult, day in and day out without any hope that their families would ever be able to afford a simple prosthesis that would change their life.

Because of your support of our first hike, we appealed again in June 2013, with hopes that we could get more kids the prosthetic limbs they need. From June 7 - 13, David and I hiked another 90 miles from Georgia (Dick's Creek Gap) to the Fontana dam in North Carolina, raising over $4,500 in the process. Thanks to you, we accomplished our goal!

For just $250 a child can receive a prosthetic leg to be given the freedom of mobility that we often take for granted and that we are so blessed to enjoy.

How great would it be to see more kids mobile again, exploring and moving freely?

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us through our Facebook page, Pigtails & The Pirate King. We will be posting on twitter and facebook throughout the hike. Thank you friends and family for your continued support for our AT adventures.
